Question:

Our children are 8 and 10. I was just wondering what time other parents give for a bedtime for similar ages?

The kids will be 9 and 11 in August. They now go upstairs to our loft and watch TV at 10:30. They then go into their rooms at 11pm to sleep. They may still be on their laptops or reading when they go into bed at 11pm. These are weekend bedtimes. I already think this is too late for their ages. My husband now wants to extend the weekend bedtimes even later because it is summer and they do not have school. We are curious to see what bedtimes other parents are setting for their children of similar ages. Do you set a limit on sugar after a certain time at night? When you put your children to bed is it lights out? Thanks for your replies.

  1. I'm 13 and my sister is 11.

We stay up as long as we'd like. Sometimes 'till 2 or 3 am.

And we have no restrictions on sugar or anything.

It's summer. Let them have some fun.

  2. I am 11 and during the summer I go to bed at 10:30 and wake up at 8:00. During the school year I go to bed at 9:30 ands wake up at 7:00. I think for a 8 year old they should go bed at 9:00 during the summer and during the school year. The 10 year old should go to bed at 9:30 or 10:00 during the school year ans summer. I hope this helped and have a safe and fun summer.

  3. Because it's summer, I'd keep those times, maybe expanding them 15 minutes. For school though, and even weekends, you want to keep a pattern so its not like LATE EARLY EARLY EARLY LATE.... etc. I think that a 9 year old should go to bed at 9:00-9:30. That means lights out, or maybe reading in bed. The 11 year old should be 10:00, lights out, asleep. I recommend you setting a time that they should be off of electronics, like 8:30.

  4. Wow, that is really late for this age to go to bed.  My son is 8 and he needs to be in bed by 8, falls a sleep before 9 on a school night.  Anything less than that and he is miserable the next day.  He will end up sick too.  Weekends I say he goes to bed no later than 10 and that is still really late for him.  I would advise you to talk it over with your husband and make bed timeearler.  Oh and my son is only allowed one snack after dinner, no matter what time it is one snack and that is it.

  5. from 10- 11 tops sugar ends at 9 lights out also at 10 11

  6. 11 ! i'd say 9 is the latest

  7. 9 pm for the younger and 9:30 for the older one.

  8. when i was 12 my 4 brothers and sisters had the same bedtime as me. 830!

  9. Mine are 7 and 9 and go to bed at 8:30 during the school year and around 9 during the summer.  The hour before bedtime is for reading books (first half hour aloud, then to themselves).  Then the lights go out.  They eat dessert (usually fruit, sometimes ice cream, rarely something else) right before we start reading books, and after that it's just water.

Do your kids sleep really late? If so it probably doesn't matter.  My kids are generally up at 6:30 or earlier, so need the earlier bedtime.

  10. my sisters kid is eight and on the weekends she doesnt have a bedtime but she usauslly just goes to bed whenever her mom does and i rember when i was a kid i didnt have a bedtime in the summer or weekends and i slept over my cuzins alot we stayed up till like 1 or 2 and somtimes we only stayed up till 10 lol so just whenever i think tht bedtimes fine as long as they get sleep before school or a important event or if they to get up real early the next day stuff like tht

  11. at nine my kid would be in bed by 9:00 and they 11 year old would be in bed by 10:00 JMO

  12. Our 9 year old son goes to bed between 8:30 and 9 not later.  He is allowed to read in bed for about a half hour.  This is weekend and summer routine.  He is only allowed to stay up later for special occasions.

We restict sugars no matter if we are in the summer or school year.  Both our children at most get one sugary treat a day and no later than 7. We also restrict drinking after 7 to avoid them having to wake up in the middle of the night. My oldest use to have a problem with that.

In addition I agree with some of the other posters that it can be dangerous to allow unsupervised access like that to the internet.  I would encourage you to put the computer in a place they can be watched to ensure they are only accessing websites good for their age.

I would also encourage them getting out and doing something outside.  If they get physcial activity during the day they may not want to stay up till 11 pm.  I know my oldest plays sports year round pretty much and he is absolutely egsosted by 9.

  13. my best friend has a ten year old child. Her bedtime is 9.15

  14. For my children who are 9 and 11 aswell lights out at 9:30 and 10:00 on weekends. They do go to bed with a tv but only on for half an hour.

After 8 my children are not aloud suger or coke.

When they have a friend over its bed at 10:00 and 10:45 tv off.

  15. iam 11 years old and i can stay up as late as i like but they next day if i look tired or feel tired than my makes be go to bed earlyer

  16. My oldest are 9 and 10. The go to bed at 8:30 all school year. In the summer (now) their bedtime is 9:30. It's really unhealthy to let them stay up so late. Also they shouldn't be using a computer or watching tv right before beds. It doesn't let their brains slow down. We limit sugar to one thing a day. They only get soda if we go to a restaurant, which isn't very often. And never before bed. Rots their teeth.

  17. I think those bedtimes are fine my son is 5 1/2 and he go's to bed at 10:00 and watches a movie and then goes to sleep!!  and that is every night and he wakes up on his own for school!!  It's not about what other people think or do it is what you are comfortable with and what works for your family!!

  18. 9-10pm the latest - what time do they get up in the AM?  I would make sure they are up at going at a reasonable time, 8am or so - it should get them to bed at a better hour - dont sleep the day away.

  19. When I was younger, my bedtime was 8:00 when I was eight and 9:00 p.m. when I was 10.  During the summer it was no later than 10:00 p.m..

  20. 8pm on school nights well the older one could stay up til 8:30 and 10 pm on weekends.  You and your husband need some time alone every night AFTER the kids go to bed.  You are right, they do stay up to late for their ages!  Yes, lights out when they are in bed!

  21. I am ten years old so I should know myself but I usualy go to bed at 11 with TV on and I sleep on the couch, I usually sometimes stay up so on weekdays I'd say 10:00 and on friday, saturdays, and off-school days (If they go to camp then they probably need to go with the sunday-thursday bedtime of 10. Have a nice time getting them 2 sleep

  22. I agree with 9 the latest

  23. That's really late.  My daughter is almost ten years old.  On weekdays she goes to bed at 8 pm, but she reads in bed for about an hour before going to sleep.  On the weekends, she gets to stay up an extra hour (9pm plus time to read).  If we are doing something special and she has friends over, then sometimes she'll stay up until 11 pm, but that's only a few times a year.  She doesn't eat that much sugar, so its not an issue for us.

  24. 11!!!! wow i would say thats lat e. when i was 9-11 it was probably 9:30 or 10. now im 15 and i dont have a bedtime, but i chose to go to bed at 10 or 10:30 so im not too tired for school and stuff. i do stay up later in the summer (like midnight) but i sleep really late in the day so i try to go to bed early. i would say that they should go to bed earlier even in the summer so they dont spend there days sleeping or being grouchy and tired. it depends when they get up. you just want to make sure they get enough sleep.

  25. My sisters will be 9 and 11 in august as well, my mom puts them to bed at 9 during the school year but they usually dont get to sleep until 10. Weekends they really dont have a bed time, they usually mess around on the internet an watch some tv before they crash.   She does limit the sugar, none after 7 or they will be jumpin going crazy all night.   Since it is summer there really isnt any lights out except on saturday because they have church on sunday.    All kids are different so it really depends on the childrens behavior and how they cope during the day.   If yours arnt cranky all day and slacking then the bed times arnt really a problem.   My mom had her last kid when she was 40, she is ALOT more leanent with them than us 3 older kids... im 26 now but can remember having a strict bedtime of no later than 9 on weekdays and 10 on weekends.

  26. My daughter is 8, she is in bed most nights at 9 pm

Sometimes, if she does not have camp or school, she stay up to 9:30

I think 11pm for an 8/9 year old is two late

    Not my child

  27. I have a 7 and 11 year old, the older one is allowed to stay up until 11pm when there is no school or other reason to get up early in the morning, the younger one goes to bed around 9 or 930, on school nights  the bed time is 9pm for both kids

  28. In the bed at 9pm

    no sugar after 6pm..~

  29. It is summer time now so it is different but I have noticed in my kids are not put in their room to lay down by 9:00 they are crabby. Doesnt mean they have to go to sleep then but it is time to wind down for the night. On the weekends and summer however they need to be in bed my 11pm

  30. I have ages 9 and 10.

    8:00 school days

9 - 9:30 weekends during school term and during Summer
