  1. Hi, I also live in a flat and we have the same blue bags for rubbish.

Can someone tell me please if these bags are biodegradeable? Thanks.

  2. you cant do plastic shopping bacs 4 sum reason

  3. call the council and ask them. every area recycles differently so unless someone on here is liek your neighbour...wont help much

  4. As an American I am totally amazed by how much of your life's simple decisions you hand over to your gvmt.  Do you enjoy being treated as children?

Here where I live, I hire my trash collector from several available companies.  I hire the company I selected because they pick up my trash and they sort through it taking out what they can to be recycled for their profit, what can be composted and sold for their profit, and what has to be landfilled.

I don't have to make an effort to recycle.  It is done for me.

  5. I move around the country alot and noticed every area is so different when it comes to  recycling. You need to ring up the local council and ask them to send you a pamplet on what and what not to recycle.

  6. If you are in Canada, you can check out BlueBoxMore.ca

Even if you are not in Canada, the recycling program should be similar.

You can recycle the soda bottles, but not the cap... and so on. They are clearly instructed on the website.

You may also call up your recycling program for a their website or pamphlets.

  7. All councils seem to do something different.  We cannot recycle Plastic milk bottles, but Birmingham council do if they have the number "2" on the bottom.  You should have been given a list of what to recycle and which day they will collect. Most will not take packaging and plastic bags.  I use the plastic bags to wrap stuff that is not suitable for recycling or composting.

  8. I am glad you are concerned enough to ask this question because by getting it right you can save you local council money (which will help keep the local taxes down) and you can help achieve a greener and better resourced world for all of us to enjoy.

Unfortunately there is no easy answer because each council does things differently to reflect local circumstances.  If I were you I would be inclined to phone them up and ask them to send you a leaflet concerning what you should put out and how you should sort it.  It would be good if they would do this on line but by post if necessary.

Dr Jello sneers at the British for bothering to sort our rubbish but it is far easier and therefore less costly to sort at source than to do it later.  You can have a container for each sort of rubbish and simply put it in the right container for no cost and no extra effort.  Only Dr Jello would think this a waste of time.

Another thing you could do to help reduce waste and pollution is to think about what you buy.  Try and avoid goods that have been flown around the world and which are heavily packaged.  For example fresh fruit and vegetables grown locally and fetched in your own bag are far preferable to processed foods in plastic bags supplied by the shops.  Not only will there be less to recycle or dump in landfill but the food will be better for you and more interesting too.

You have probably got a good many plastic bags already and need only remember to take them with you when you go shopping.

Best wishes for a less wasteful Christmas.

  9. What you can recycle varies with each council. Some do plastics and glass and some don't. You should of received an information pack with the bag, if you didn't phone your council help desk and request one.
