Does anyone know any really products that actually work?

We have tried everything but nothing seems to work. He is always biting and scratching to the point where he cuts himself open. His back is all scarred. We try to stop him and give him baths but it doesnt work.

  1. Take him to the vet for some super strength cream

  2. The other poster is right with Spot On - it stopped our dog's fleas.

You need to treat the whole house though too - get flea powder for the carpets, dog's bedding and anywhere else the dog goes.  Edge of the carpet are popular with fleas, as are the sofa/soft chairs and just underneath the sofa.

It'll cost a few bob (£10-20) but you need to treat the whole house.  And if you treat it every few days for a month then when the eggs hatch you'll catch them too.

Spot On is good for the dog - it goes behind the collar and on the back as far as I can recall.  Any flea spray/powder will do for the house.

  3. Definitely go to the vet. They can give you a prescription for the fleas and the itching as well.  Be careful about the baths.  They could dry out the skin and cause more itching!

    Best Wishes,

    Pat

PS  I have just dealt with the same problem with the exception of the bathing!

  4. If you know it is actually fleas treat your home.

Only a small percentage of fleas in or aound your home are on your dog, around 3%.

I use 4 parts borax powder and 1 part salt. I sprinkle it on all my carpets and leave for 2 days then vaccuum up.

I would do this once a week or fortnight.

I just moved into a new home that was flea ridden, poor Rocco was eaten alive. I did this and lay an old sheet over the boraxed carpets and it worked wonders. I fleacombed my dog each day to relieve him of any fleas that were on him.

I just want to add. You may need to see a vet. You want to be sure it is not an allergy, mange or severe flea allergy.

    Good Luck.

  5. There is a product in a small tube that you cut the tip off, and put it just between your dog's shoulder blades.  I don't know how it works, but it does.  Also, I saw a neat trick on DIY Network for getting rid of fleas, in case they've gotten into your house--put a green nightlight in a wall socket, and put a bowl of soapy water under it.  The green light attracts the fleas, and they fall into the soapy water.  Then just give them a burial at sea in the morning!

  6. I think everyone should be aware of the life-cycle of the flea, and maybe you will understand why they are so difficult to get rid of, once they have infested your home.

The only real way of getting rid of them is to make sure you are treating your pet with a good treatment, like Frontline, or advantage, recommended by your vet. The pupae (cocoon) stage of the flea is VIRTUALLY INDESTRUCTIBLE, and can hide in your carpets and furnishings for up to 2 years, and can choose when it wants to hatch into a flea, so it's important that you keep treating your dog, even when you think you've cracked the flea problem.

Have a look at the links I've added,it explains the lifecycle, and stages of the flea, and I hope it helps.

Sponge down the dog's sores with a solution of Lavender essential oil ( 30 drops in a washing up bowl ) This is not only soothing, and healing, but the fleas don't like the Lavender either.

  7. Take him to the vets as  many years ago my friend had a dog that scratched so much he bled it got so bad that the poor thing started loosing his fur ! We all thought it was Mange but in fact the dog had a flea allergy .The vet had it sorted out fairly quickly so off to the vet with your animal

  8. Take him to the vet. They can examine him, take some samples (if necessary) and say whether it's only fleas or perhaps another problem too. He can then be treated accordingly.

  9. if its bad go to the vet hel exam9ine him get rid of them if possible and also buy a flea collar you can get them in any pet store also to get rid of the scars go into the pet shop and say back cream for dogs and a flea collar hope i helped

  10. If your dog is that bad, you might be better off going to the vets. If the dogs has a skin problem from scratching it may need vet intervention. The dog may have scabies or some other skin bacterial infection. The best thing for fleas is prevention! Frontline Spot on Combi works fine on my dog. She's NEVER had fleas. But you have to do it every 2 months to PREVENT the fleas taking hold. If you have a cat, that makes it worse, you may need to thoroughly fumigate your house too. The dogs is probably getting re-infected. If the flea eggs are in the carpets and bedding, they will just jump back on and breed all over again!

  11. Take him to the vet,the vet might recommend creams or shampoos that will work or maybe it is other problems.............
