Question:

Our gas just got turned off because of unpaid bills. Will this hurt my roommates credit if it goes unpaid?

Just wondering what the chances are of the gas company pursuing this high balance (roughly $600). We are moving out in about a month and I just am curious if they'll try and seek out their money in the future or what will happen. Thanks for the help!

  1. The utility company will sell the debt off to a collection agency who will report the debt to the credit bureau.  They may also track you down (or whoever's name the account is in) and try to collect.

  2. It will go on the credit bureau of the person that the bill is in the name of.  If it's in your friends name then it can hurt their credit rating.  The company will most likely send it to a collection agency.

  3. It will hurt the credit of those people who are on the gas account.

You can guarantee they'll go after it, too. And once it hits your credit report (and chances are it already has if you're at the point of being turned off), it will stay there. Start paying it, even in small amounts, and work something out with the gas company to continue paying it.

Because no matter how bad it is having a default on your credit report, it's worse having an UNPAID default on your credit report!

  4. Any and all roommates need to take care of this before you move out.  Whoever's name is on the bill will be in for a big problem and will end up paying it all themselves if they want to avoid problems.

The gas company will attempt to collect in any way they can and it will affect the account holder's credit for many years to come if it is not paid.

  5. It will hurt the party whose name is on the gas bill.  That is the party responsible for payment.

  6. It will only hurt the credit of the person whose name is on the account.

  7. The gas company will send the the bill to a collection agency and it will hurt your roomate's credit.
