Our hamster is laying on his side, hunchbacked. He keeps taking deep, short breaths every couple seconds without fail. He's been doing this since we looked in his cage about a half hour ago. He's making the quietest noises but nothing crazy. He isn't playing with us, responding to us, or moving except for the scary breathing movements. Occasionally, he flinches his body. Does anyone know what is wrong with Hammy?? He is a two year old chinese dwarf hamster. Please help! We love him very much.

  1. its best to leave him be.

  2. Actually, dwarf hamsters have fairly short lives. It's very possible that he's in the last stages of his life. This is exactly how my hammy acted in the last day of his life.

Are his eyes open or closed? Does he seem aware of his environment? He could possible have wet tail.

If this doesn't improve within a few hours, or if it gets worse, please, please, PLEASE take him to the vet. Get a second opinion, and see how bad it is. You don't want him to suffer any longer than he has to.

I hope he gets better, it's always hard when pets are sick.

  3. aww im very sorry.. i understand because i had a hamster that had a tumor.. its so sad.. but i beleive he might be choking.. idk what to do

    very sorry

  4. Well maybe he is slowly dieing of old age.

  5. Awww. Hun it'll be okay. Dwarfs dont always last long. Stay with him. I know you love him very much but if you let him go he will not suffer. My hamster past but now hes still with me. Forever in my heart! Take him to the animal hospital. Best wishes!! :-(

  6. Dwarf hamsters have very short lives, but  ehtier:

if he doesn't have his eyes opened, he is in a deep sleep, and unforuanly will die.

if he does have his eyes open and is stiff then he is dead and

thats just what happens afetr things die.

If none of the above he is too hot, give him some water, NOW.

He might also be choking, if so there is nothing u can do about this, SORRY!

If none of the above then you should leave him alone, he might have respatory problems, unforunately, there isn't much the vet can do to treat small animals like that, sorry, and good luck with your hammy!!!

  7. Hey just wanted to make a suggestion. The weather has been really hot and I have read a hamster book that suggests that if a hamster gets to hot it can go into hibernation and can die if it's temp is not regulated slowly!  If he is not eating you can give him ferret supplement available at the pet store. Also give him Childrens Pedialyte to keep from getting dehydrated. I personally have had to do this because my hamster was lose for several days and I had to nurse it back to health! I love my five hamsters and I will keep ur hammie in my thoughts and prayers. Hope this helps!

  8. Heat Stroke

        * Caused by prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or some other direct heat source.

        * Fur will be damp, the hamster will be unresponsive.

        * Cool the hamster in cool water and get it to drink water.

        * Get to vet if no immediate recovery is seen.

    Only thing I can find.

I'm sorry to say that to me it sounds like he's dying and going for his last "run", it's a process rodents go through, he won't be feeling pain though if it is this and I really hope it's the heat stroke and you can help rather than this.

    Sorry.
