About 2 days ago, our house tap water began to take on a dirt (earth-like) taste and smell. We are hooked up to Fort Wayne City Water in Fort Wayne, Indiana. We have bought some bottled water to last a while. This is due to its unpleasent taste and just in case it is foul. My question is... Is this normal? Is it due to the large amount of rain we have had this summer in Fort Wayne (our water table is low due to the 3 rivers we have here)? But, most importantly how can I find out if it is safe to drink? Any help would be greatful. Thank You!

  1. Usually when consumers notice an earthy smell/taste in their water there are a few problematic areas which could be the root of the problem.

    1.  If your house is near the end of a water distribution line, the line itself may need to be flushed.  Dead end lines collect sediment and without a proper flushing program by your water provider, this can create serious tastes and odors.

    2.  If you only notice this smell/taste during the winter months, the problem could be act your local water treatment facility.  During winter months, especially with high amounts of rainfall, sediment and organics are washed into the streams and lakes that are used as source water for water treatment plants.  This extra amount of sedimentation and/or organics can create an added earthy aroma and taste to your water.  If you are concerned, I suggest contacting you local water provider.

  2. It time to check the water reservoir maybe the waterfilter going to households needs maintenance and repair.
