  1. See the flag, being called a tri-color is a slight mistake. It should have been called tri-band. But, calling a falg by the colour of it's bands is a practice adopted  worldwide. So, since the Ashoka Chakra is not a band, the flag is called tri-color, taking into consideration, the number of equally sized horizontal bands only.

More infor on the Indian national flag...

    length to breadth ratio        -----       3 : 2

The saffron stands for courage, sacrifice and the spirit of renunciation

The white, for purity and truth

The green for faith and fertility.

The Ashoka Chakra stands for our forward journey, according to our dharma

  2. our flag was initially a three band flag... the flag had mahatma gandhi's weaving wheel after gandhi era. it was much later that we replaced it with the ashok chakra...calling our flag "tiranga" or "tri color" is a practise followed since much past that...

  3. If your flag has white or black in it they don't count because they are not colours they are monochromes.

  4. The French flag has only one color- white.

  5. Since the 3 colours represent certain qualities, and all these colours r in equal proportion,we call it tricolour. but the chakra is a symbol which indicates some meaning..

  6. You can tell your son the United States Flag has two colors on it IF he want to be exact, blue and red. White the third color is not really a color; but a hue. Black is a hue too. Grays are shades, not colors.  :)

  7. If you are talking about the Indian flag I believe it is called a tricolor because of the 3 equally sized bars of saffron, white and green.  The colors themselves have meaning (purity and spirituality, peace and truth, fertility and prosperity respectively).  The center symbol, the Ashoka Chakra, is in blue but it could have just as easily been in another color such as black; it is the symbol itself, not the color, that has meaning.  Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan states, "The wheel represents the dynamism of a peaceful change"

  8. Which National Flag?

The US Flag has only 3 colors: Red, White and Blue.

  9. i stand with sachin answer.its accurate.

  10. Very true and quite logical argument too.

It's called Tiranga because of the three horizontal and equal bands. The chakra and it's colour is not considered.

  11. The second answer given by Judy L is specific and I also go with it.

  12. He is really nice boy , I should say first.

    Back to your answer.

We call our national flag as Tiranga (Tri colour) because we care the message given to the whole world using these three colours. These three colours have significance and message.

The charka that you are talking about is not significant because of its colour but it gives message of the sign of Ashok Charka - For bravery.

Since we give message based on three colours in our flag we say Tri colour.
