Question:

Our washing machine drum won't turn?

We have an indesit washing machine. It's about 4 years old. We have had it in storage for a year and the drum now won't turn. We've had the back off and tested the motor (seems to work fine) and the belt is attached. Tried to turn the drum manually using the wheel thingy at the back and it's extremely stiff - like it's just ceased up during the time it has been in storage.

Any ideas whether this is a fixable problem? And if so, is it an expensive job? Will a washing machine engineer be able to fix it, or is it going to go to washing machine heaven?!

Thanks very much.

  1. If it is just a matter of the drum not turning, you can try WD40 or something to loosen up the rust. A little more force on the wheel that you were trying to turn might do the job then. Not worth changing the machine for such a small problem.

  2. Could be a bearing or clutch. Most often the cost of repairs is not much less than a new washer, I would replace it.

  3. See if you can get a expert out there to look at it and see what it would cost to fix it. Then debate whether or not it is cheaper to get it fixed or to buy a new one.
