Out of Bounds off the Triple Crown with the condylar fracture
Another Triple Crown possible off the trail, as the newest member to the list is the Eoin Harty trained 3-year-old colt, Out of Bounds, who suffered a condylar fracture of the left front cannon bone while working out at Hollywood Park.
Owned by Darley Stable, Out of Bounds after his half length victory over another Triple Crown prospect, Secret Circle, in the Grade 3 Sham Stakes, was working out for a run in the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes on 10 March, 2012.
“He is resting comfortably and is fine," Harty said. "He will have surgery within the next few days. I’ll expect him to be out for at least 90 days. His prognosis is excellent.
“I did not notice anything wrong with him until after 20 minutes into his cool out. He had an exceptional work this morning—a very good work. We all had high hopes for this horse. We are all very disappointed—not only for me and my staff but for the Maktoum
family as well, for he is a homebred.”
The Kentucky bred is the son of Discreet Cat, out of mare Unbridled Elaine by Unbridled’s Song, turned in a bullet work regardless of his injury as he was the fastest of 23 at the distance.
His work was broken down into fractions as he went the quarter mile in 23 4/5 seconds and then completed his work in 35 2/5 seconds. Out of Bounds then galloped out six furlongs with the time of 1 minute and 12 3/5 seconds.
The 3-year-old colt failed miserably when asked to break his maiden at first going, as he finished a distant 4th to winner, So Brilliant, who defeated The Roan Ranger in second and Hustlin Nu in third, while covered the six furlong distance in
1 minute and 9.02 seconds at Santa Anita Park’s dirt course on 22 October, 2011.
He was then introduced to the Hollywood Park’s cushion track on 10 December, 2011, where he romped his way past Fleet Eagle and Where’s Henry in the stretch, who finished second and third, respectively, while Out of Bounds covered the seven furlong distance
in 1 minute and 23.17 seconds.
Out of Bounds would’ve been sent as the favourite or the second choice if he was fit to participate in the San Felipe Stakes, but the race is now expected to be headed by Bob Baffert’s trainee, Liaison.
