Out of all the tourist destinations in Italy, which is the most overrated?

Everyone always asks about the good spots, but I think the disappointments and not-so-worthwhile places are good to mention, as well.

Are there any that you feel weren't as spectacular as the guidebooks claim?

Any sights that you thought were a complete waste of time?

Please say why it was disappointing.

  1. I agree with who ever said the Spanish Steps below. Nothing at all special there...

  2. Pisa. once you've seen the campinale that's it.

  3. Apart from the gondola - I thought Venice was boring.  Yeah, cool, the city is sinking - but I was ready to move on after spending an hour there.

  4. Hello,

I thought the Spanish Steps were a let down.  They are not as big as they look in photos and were rather plain looking.  All in all, not worth it for me to see them again.

  5. The north is "discovered" Italy The regions of Piemonte and Lombardy , in the northwest, make up the richest and most cosmopolitan part of the country, and the two main centres, Turin and Milan, are its wealthiest large cities. In their southern reaches, these regions are flat and scenically dull, especially Lombardy, but in the north the presence of the Alps shapes the character of each: skiing and hiking are prime activities, and the lakes and mountains of Lombardy are time-honoured tourist territory. Liguria , the small coastal province to the south, has long been known as the "Italian Riviera" and is accordingly crowded with sun-seeking holiday-makers for much of the summer season. Nonetheless it's a beautiful stretch of coast, and its capital, Genoa, is a bustling port with a long seafaring tradition.

  6. Isle of Capri was one of the biggest letdowns I have ever experienced whilst travelling. I was so excited as I have always wanted to see it, but it was packed, and i mean PACKED with tourists - as in, elbow to elbow, couldn't move, arrogant (no offence intended) Americans screaming at each other to push ahead in the lines, you just couldn't move. Having said that, if you go in winter perhaps it's really beautiful - it is a gorgeous island as far as the scenery and geography go, but the crowds just made us want to leave within an hour.

  7. for me, Sardinia is the best!
