Out of nowhere Dynamic Sky can take the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile
Mike Casse didn’t have a strong opinion about 2-year-old Sky Mesa colt, Dynamic Sky, who surprised Casse, and so far in three starts of his debut season, he is yet to finish worse than third. The amazing start from an unlikely source prompted Mike Casse
to take a shot with his fiery juvenile in the Grade 1, $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita Park on 3 November, 2012.
Out of Marju’s mare Murani, Dynamic Sky kicked off his racing career at Woodbine race course, and started with a couple of restricted races. He was introduced in the Vandal Stakes on 28 July, 2012, and he immediately made an impact.
John C. Oxley’s stretchy horse turned heads when he romped to a third place finish over Woodbine’s synthetic surface under rider Luis Contreras going 6 furlongs.
Recognising his ability to challenge in the stretch, he was obviously prepared for more, and race he did in 2 month’s time when in September he was let loose in the Simcoe Stakes stretching out to six and one-half furlongs on Woodbine’s Polytrack.
Mike Casse must have been out of his seat, seeing his colt having enough fighting spirit that early in his career to edge past Honorable Guest by a mere head to post his first victory in his second start.
That called for experimenting, with the season coming to a close, and Breeders’ Cup right around the corner, Mike Casse wanted to see how Dynamic Sky would respond to two-turns.
The trainer wasn’t lest disappointed as he saw what he wanted to see. With not a lot going his way in the 1 1/16 mile Grade 1 Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland, Dynamic Sky battled hard, but made a mistake of going wide ending up running more than the winner,
but sadly losing in second.
“I thought he should have won,” Casse said. “He ran 72 feet farther than the winner. He was really wide and as he came into the lane, he looked like he was going to go by that other horse, but he lugged in. He’s just green, and it was his first two-turn
race. I thought after that performance, he deserved a chance in the Breeders’ Cup.”
Shanghai Bobby, a Todd Pletcher’s juvenile surprise will be a formidable foe going into the Cup Juvenile, but Dynamic Sky has one thing over Shanghai Bobby, and that’s a two-turn race experience over his rival which will aid him well in the 1 1/16 mile Breeders’
Cup Juvenile.
