I'm going to be 30 this year and I decided to go to college. I graduated in 1997 and have been a stay at home mom for the past 5 years. I feel like the only thing I know is sesame street and babies. Where/How can I find anything to bring me back to an adult education level? I start college in 2009 so I need to cram before then so I'm not behind. Any suggestions? Thanks!

  1. the best advice i can give is to start off slow, if you take on too much u'll get so overwhelmed u may just quit... so register for one class (since you stated ur a stay at home mom) see how that works out for one semester, then next semester take two see how that goes... and by the 3rd semester you should have ur schedule all worked out and will be better prepared to take on a full load.

Take classes every semester (Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter) so u'll be able to finish in a shorter amount of time.  Pick a community college first get ur AA degree that's 60 units once that's done transfer to a university for ur BA.

Trust me that's what I'm doing and i graduated in '82.  The good thing is ur 30 and u can be done by the time ur 35, either way u can be 35 with a degree or without....

Good luck to u, remember slow at first will be ur best bet to complete overall.

    Cheers

  2. A lot of colleges offer classes that you teach you college study skills. I would look into this and maybe it can get you up to speed. But don't worry you will do great. I think most people who didn't go to college right after H.S. appreciate it more and they work harder.

  3. there is nothing you need to cram for.  just go to school with an open mind.  the first 2 years of college are like high school anyways.  english, math, science, social studies.  talk to your adviser for the best route.  good luck!!

  4. I was out of school for over 25 years.. I started back last year working on a degree at University full time.. The most important thing for you to do is to learn how to read properly again.  Learning how to read with purpose may take up to two months... It's amazing how quickly the brain adapts.. The other thing is to remember to enjoy your time in school.. as an adult you have many life experiences that your class mates haven't had yet... They may be quicker thinking, but you are much wiser.. Slow and steady wins the race and gets the good marks.... I know....

  5. Trust me, the most difficult part about going back to college at OUR age (29) is dealing with the 18-20 year-olds in your class.

If you've never been to college, the entry English and Math classes will suit you fine in terms of having a smoother transition. Have you taken the Placement tests yet? The placement tests can sometimes help you gauge where you are academically. Aside from that, I don't think cramming is necessary. Now if you just want to brush up on the stuff you left off with in high school, maybe pick up a GED Study Guide or an SAT Prep Study Guide (preferably by Kaplan) and work with those. That should help quite a bit.

Congrats! You've made a great decision to go back.

  6. It will not be hard.

The only thing that will be hard is taking the time at home to do homework and to write papers; Unless you have trouble with Math or some other subject.

College is fun to learn, but, it is really the time and hassel of requirements and testing, and only if you are weak in some subject.

    Otherwise you will be fine.

I am 29 and going too. I  have my AA but I need an AS to do something in the medical field that I have recently decided to do.

    Good Luck to you.
