Question:

Out of state and need a car inspection?

I am attending a college out of state. My car is registered in my home state. It's due for an inspection in June. I won't be able to go home any time soon. Can I just get an inspection at a body shop in the state I'm in now, or do I have to go back to my home state?

  1. Probably not.  You would have to call the DMV in your home state to be sure, but inspection stations have to be certified by each state or province.  They may give you a deferral notice to allow you to bring the car back during summer break.  I once got a deferral because the only factory making a brake line for my car was on strike.
