Question:

Out of state routing number on check w/local address?

I own a small business and wondered how a bank handles this. Do they go by the address on the check, or does the routing number show them it's from out of state? I need to know because banks always tell me funds are there, when really they're not. My bank releases funds from local checks the next business day, for out of state, it's more like 5 days. Anyone in banking know about this? I can't seem to trust the tellers here.

  1. Im in banking.  It all depends on the routing number.  The first 4 digits of the number will indicate whether or not it is a local or non-local check.  Local checks take up to two days to clear after the day of the deposit and you should be able to have your first 100 dollars available to you.  Non-Local checks can take a little bit longer, they are usually available the fourth business day after the day of deposit.  But remember holds can be placed on checks for special reasons as well  Work with your local bank and find out what the local numbers are for where you live and they should be able to let you know.
