Question:

Out of state ticket and insurance points help?

I was vacationing in Washington state and had a rental and this cop pulls me over for 57 in a 40 when it was already dark and no one was on the road and he knew I wasn't from around there. He gives me a ticket and I live in New Jersey so I obviously can't fight it. Now I've been asking around and some people say that New Jersey doesn't care so we don't get points for out of state tickets and other say I'll get points. This is my first ticket ever. Anyone had a situation like this? [it'll be more helpful if you have a Jersey license, but any suggestions would be great] Thanks

  1. Often out of state moving violations ARE NOT reported for points.  BUT if you don't pay they will report it for points.  In another word WASH state has no way to track you down to make you pay.  So they are rewarding you for paying.

I live in NY and got few tickets from NJ.  I spoke to a lawyer and that how it works with NY and NJ.

    Good Luck...

  2. Wow. That was a really stupid answer...Saying Washington has no way to track you down. TRUST ME ON THIS. I lost my license for failure to pay a ticket. WHen you get pulled over, whats the first thing a cop asks for? A DRIVERS LIC...What does he do? RUN YOUR DRIVERS LIC. Look on your ticket...Is your DL on there? If you say no, I want to see the ticket lol...They will track you down, you will have a warrant if you do not pay, for failure to pay a traffic fine. Your lic. will be suspended (depending on state for length of time)...Just pay the ticket unless you want to spend a few grand to go out there and fight it. You can take a quick 4 hour course online (if points are put on your lic) to have them taken off. If its your first ticket, most insurance companies overlook it. Why would you fight it anyways? That is 17mph over, regardless of who is on the road, what time it is, and if you are from there or not. There are posted speed limit signs all over the place. You would lose. THe only chance you would have at winning, is if the cop did not show up for court, which is a unlikely chance. Most departments require officers to go, regardless, unless say he had a serious matter come up, like a death in the family or something, he would be there, your few grand spent to go out there would be gone, plus you would pay the fine, plus court costs. Just pay it, do a safe driver/point forgiveness course online, and be done with it.

  3. Most out of state tickets transfer to NJ as a 2 point ticket.  Since you were going over 15 over the limit, if you had gotten the ticket in NJ it would have been 4 points.

I am not sure how long it takes but I would assume within 30 days of you paying the ticket.  Make sure you pay it because an unpaid ticket will get your license suspended, no matter where you got it.

The ticket will show up on your insurance on your next renewal (as long as the renewal is more than 45 days after the ticket is posted on your license).

  4. "Some people" are idiots.  Don't let them operate on you, either.

You'll get points.  It just might take a while to show up.  NJ shares violation information with the other states.
