  1. 18 is a good number

  2. 17

  3. It varies gymnast to gymnast actually.  Based on how difficult a routine is, an appropriate score is given (the more challenging the moves, the more points you get).  That's what the starting score is, and usually is somewhere between 5 and 7ish.  From there, then there's 10 points maximum available from execution of those moves, then the numbers are combined for the score.

In other words, one person could score a potential max score of 15.7 if they're starting/difficulty score is 5.7, but the next person, with a difficulty/start score of 6.8 could get a max of 16.8.  The idea being that it promotes gymnasts doing more challenging moves rather than simple things they can execute perfectly every time.

  4. 17

1-7, depending on the difficulty of the routine that they are trying to do

and than the second panel of judges starts from 10 and deducts points between .1 .3 .5 and .8 for a fall and other mistake

both scores are added together for possbile 17.000

  5. There's no score that gymnasts start at and get deducted. Well, not really.

There's two parts that make up a gymnast's score on a single event. The A and B scores.

The A score is the difficulty. Each skill in a routine is worth a certain number of points. The most difficult ten skills in a routine have their points added together to make up the A score (a good A score is somewhere over a 6).

The B score is the execution. This score starts out of a 10 (so in a way, a perfect ten is still possible). Wobbles, no-connections, form breaks, falls, etc. are deductions that are taken from the 10.

The two scores are added together to make the final score. A score of 15 is good, a 16 is great, and a 17 is AMAZING (and one could say it's the equivalent of a perfect 10 in the old scoring system).

    Hope that all made sense!
