  1. as a bus boy you get hourly plus tips.So your pay will vary with job performance, but you can use it as a springbroad to to something better.Waiters make a pretty descent living. You could also move into management.

  2. For some wierd reason, I could only manage to make an average of 12% tips at Outback as a waiter.  Outback really does not allow you to manage the tables your assigned.  This means that several waiters including you will run food and drinks to your table.  Outback really focuses in on a constant food running process.  This really never gives you the opportunity to focus in on your own tables.  This gives the patron the impression that all you did was take the order.  Which is why I never got good tips.  I always felt sorry for the busboys as they seemed to be on a timer as to how fast they could clear a table accurately.

At Macaroni Grill, where I could really manage my own tables as a waiter, I could really focus in on my customers needs and pay attention to them better.  This resulted in an average of 18% tips.  Most days it was 20%.  I even had customers that would come in and ask just for me due to my attention to detail.  My advice is to work for a Brinker restaurant as a waiter (Chilis, Macaroni Grill, On The Border, Little Maggios, Rockfish, etc.) as soon as you are able to do so.

Just some advice from someone who has worked both (during my periods of unemployment).

  3. They get paid 2.65 plus a tip out.  The servers tip out 3% of their sales to the bussers, hosts, and bartenders.  So it gets divided up between all of you.  The less of you the better.  On average you will get about 20-35 on weekdays, a little higher on the weekend.

  4. It really depends on the state that you live in as to what you will be paid hourly. In Kentucky, they pay our hosts and bussers the same hourly as the servers...$2.13 an hour plus tips. But here we are not even required to tip out the full 3% that other Outbacks require. So everyone shaves off a few dollars from their tip out and they make even less. I was a headwait yesterday so I even know how much everyone made in tipouts last night. We had three bussers, three hosts and two bartenders and it ranged from $18 to $28 depending on the number of hours you worked. And we were actually kind of busy yesterday and went on a wait for a little bit. It all depends but I know the pay sucks because I always hear them complaining about how little they make for the work they do. Outback realy shafts the bussers and hosts on pay.

And to the guy who never made more than 12% a night at Outback, I don't know what you're talking about. I seem to manage my tables just fine plus run food. I have attention to detail, my apps, salads, and entrees all come out in a timely manner and my tables never need to ask for anything bc I bring it beforehand. I usually average about 18%-20% a night. You just must not be a good server.
