I just bought a used Yamaha Motor. The guy i bought it from didnt know much about it, i'm guessing it is a 6 or so HP, with an internal gas tank. My question is would it be a 2 or 4 stroke motor? I dont know to just put gas in the motor ota mixture of gas and oil.

I can not find a model or sereal number anywhere on the motor. I was able to find "Y-2 6E0-01" on the block.

Can anyone tell me how i can tell if it is a 2 or 4 stroke motor?

  1. Take the engine cover off and look for an oil level dipstick.  If the Yamaha is equiped with a dipstick it is a 4 stroke with oil in the crankcase.  If not, it is a two cycle and you will need to mix your fuel.

  2. Look for an oil dipstick and an oil drain plug on the powerhead. If you can't find either of these, it's a 2 stroke.  Here's a link to a site that may be of future help.:

    Good luck!

  3. Look around the spark plugs, if there are removable caps to adjust the valve clearances, it is a four stroke.  If the area around the spark plugs is solid with no openings, it is a two stroke.  You may have to remove a portion of the engine cowling to do this.
