If you are planning to keep this engine for awhile, invest in a tuneup and repair manual. It will pay for itself many times over the life of the engine. Here is a site that sells them:

Well, Chysler 55 HP Outboard does not help much in explaining how to set up your carb.  The year and model number info is essential for knowing the type of carb setup.

Are you doing this with a service manual for your outboard or doing it in the dark?  Carb configuring is not something you should guess at.  You need the correct procedures for getting the fuel & air mixture right and adjusting the idle jet(s) and main jet(s).

I'm not going to guess on how yours should be done, I get my service manual out anytime I work on my boat's engine or outdrive.
