Question:

Outboard or I/O?

When buying a newer bowrider (18 feet or so), which is better- Outboard or I/O.

I am looking at fish and ski models (see Glastron, Four Winns) and would like to have the versatility to cruise and ski, or go out fishing. I live in a colder climate, so is maintenance an issue?

So which is better: Outboard or Inboard/Outboard (Sterndrive)?

  1. Outboards are easier to maintain, and in the long run will cost you less money.  Winterization is very simple and anyone can do it.  The only reason I would suggest an I/O is if this is more for watersports then anything else - in which case the added towing power and the ability to have a full swim platform make the I/O a better choice.  If watersports is just part of what you are looking for the outboard is the way to go.

  2. An i/o is a combination of both inboard and outboard that has both the good and bad characteristics of both. Horsepower limitations had kept outboards out of many boats and an i/o filled that gap. However you can get a 350 hp outboard now so that is not a factor. Many i/o boats need an engine box that seems to be in the way when fishing, just like an outboard in the back. I don't like a big hole cut out of the transom for an outdrive, just incase something breaks. Cost may be a factor, as is serviceability. Big outboards are not cheap, but i/os are not either. If I had to choose between the 2, I would go with an outboard.

  3. most definely your best choice for what u want to do would be hands down an outboard engine.technologies are changing right now in the outboard world. if u can wait a couple more years the low pressure direct injected two-strokes would be the way to go. evinrude already has high pressure direct- injected two-strokes. this technology over four-strokes gives you cleaner exhaust, and better performance and better fuel milage . check into it.

  4. There are other factors you must consider. Ease of launch, depth of water you'll be fishing in. Do you want to get close to shore is the bottom sand so you can beach it and play on the beach. Maintenance costs will be determined of you do it yourself or have the marina do it. Ease of maintenance for a beginner to boating in my opinion would be an outboard. Which would also allow for beaching the boat in relatively shallow waters as you can raise the drive completley out of the water. Also for a beginning boater the respond to the wheel faster.
