Do you like 2 stroke or 4 stroke?

2 strokes are lighter

more acceleration and at top line more

but they pollute and are very noisy

less expensive

4 stokes are very heavy

less polluting

more fuel efficient

more expensive and harder to find parts

I want to get a 14 foot Jon boat and i can't weight it down so i want a 2 stroke but i really don't know please help

But i don't know which one to get!

Any suggestions?

  1. Nissan makes a 4 stroke 5hp, http://www.onlineoutboards.com/5hp_nissa... .  So the option is open.

To me 2 stokes are meant for high rpm where revs make sump lubrication difficult.  If you're going to spend some time enjoying the ride you don't need revs and a 4 stroke is more in-line with the pleasure of the moment.

I also would make an uneducated guess that 4 strokes would require less maintenance.  If you want speed then you want revs, 2 stroke, but if your pleasure is the journey, 4 stroke.

  2. I agree with the other two guys, a small two-stroke is probably your best bet. But, If you do decide to go with a 4 stroke.....Go Honda......Less trouble than other brands. I work at a Honda/ Mercury dealership......I do more repairs on the Mercs than I do the Honda's. My 20 years in the Coast Guard sold me on the durability of Honda's also. They just dont break that often!!!

  3. Ross, you only need a 5hp motor. Don't get overcome by all the tech specs on large engines. If you don't like the noise, just get an electric trolling motor. Jon boats are not built for speed, but for stability and the ability to be beached and to go through just a few inches of water in swamps, not for big lakes with waves.

Just get a 5 hp 2-stroke that uses a 50:1 mix and you will not see any pollution.

    Regards,

    Dan

  4. Gotta agree with Dan.

Get a nice little two stroke.

It will serve your needs nicely.
