my baby herman is growing up!

the tank i keep him in is kinda small for him now and only good for sleeping,, so i took a huge cardbord box and put some sand for bedding, a shallow dish for water, food ofcourse and hiding places,,i placed it in a place where he gets a little sun and some shadow as well and its kinda hidden so that he'd be safe from big birds or anything,,

the problem is whenever i put him there he sorta panicks! he keeps walking around the edges and scratches them trying to get out, he didnt even explore it!

i left him there for a while thinking he'll get used to it and about an hour later i came back to check on him and he was scratching a corner!

what should i do?

  1. as your tortoise is only a baby get a rabbit run, you need to make sure it is the one that is all enclosed as hermans are great diggers and escape artists, cover the bottom 12 inches as tortoises cant see wire and he will try to walk through it, put him out in really hot days and place a small hide in there so he can escape the sun if he wants too, or you can buid a frame for him out of wire and wood i am sure you have seen puppy pens something like this will make him happy, a 4ft by 4ft will be enough for now place it on some grass so he can eat the grass but make sure the top is covered as birds will see him as a tasty treat while he is still small,  a herman is not happy in a tank  it does not have enough air flow for them and can get too moist for them so the sooner you get him a bigger pen the happier he will be a tortoise table is much better for them, hope you find a pen for oyur torotise as a card board box is easy to escape from and i would hate for you to loose him best of luck
