i intend getting my large front garden dug up and replaced with small red granite stones. I want to put some slabs in the middle to put large pots on with outdoor plants

which outdoor pot plants are hardy, dont grow that much that they need planted out into the garden. they have to look nice, not neccessarily flowering. can get quite windy but in summer it is a heat spot.

i work full time and am not really a gardener so they would have to be easy to look after...lol

would appreciate some help. thanks.

im meaning pots about 20 -30 ins circumference.

  1. Hey!!!!!!!! hello hun!!! where u been?? erm i don't really know much about gardening, but i am currently doing mine too .. i am going 'good life' style and have all manner of things i am trying to grow.. don't know if these are any good ..but how about a bay tree?? i think you can keep them potted, and they are really quite small for a tree (well the pictures i have seen!!!) plus you can use the leaves for cooking!!!and people seem to use them by the front doors a lot in pots... ??? erm thats about all i can think of.. i have a blueberry tree as well... its tiny at the moment, so i dunno how big its gonna get.. ??

  2. I did some container planting recently, and hd no idea what I was doing, but it has turned out surprisingly well.  I live in a very hot area, so I needed something low maintenance and that didn't need a lot of water.  I planted lantana in two pots.  It is used at times as a ground cover, but I saw pictures of it in a magazine in pots and tried it.  They are very hardy and produce lovely little rosettes of tiny pink, yellow, and gold flowers.  They can stand up to the wind--we frequently have 30-40-mph here, and grow and spread quickly.  They are not particular about soil, just start them in a good potting mix and fertilize them lightly a couple of times a month.  I also planted ice plant, and it is growing so fast I can't believe it.  It is a succulant that produces small daisy-like flowers.  Needs very little water and you can treat it just as you would the lantana.

  3. I have a very large yard but still grow some 200 plants in containers.  We get santa ana winds through our canyon and most of the container plants do fine because the soil holds them down.  Here is what I grow in containers:  ficus, geranium, spider plants, columbine, impatients, petunia, dwarf lemon, dwarf lime, avocado, oleander, eucalyptus, sheffolara, million belles, aloe, hens and chicks, jade, boston fern, hawthorne bush, sweet pea bush, rose of sharon, crepe myrtle, vinca, and herbs (sage, basil, thyme, oregano, parsley, chive and mint) as well as veggies (peppers and tomatoes).  All of them do well in the containers, though when they become root bound you do have to transplant them to larger containers.  I'm in zone 9
