Hurricane Season is upon us, with the cost of gas is it worth it to leave? What hurricane category would make you pack it up?

  1. My relatives have a beach house in the Outer Banks, and from the experience we have gathered, we've learned that hurricanes are never to be underestimated! Looking back on Hurricane Katrina and the like, I tend to have a conservative attitude when it comes to nature. Generally, if I know that a tropical storm is targeting the area, I will keep a constant hawk's eye on the conditions (If its been upgraded to hurricane status, then I'll postpone it if possible). I'd draw the line at category 2 or 3, depending.

As far as the price of gas, it depends on a lot of factors, such as the distance you are from OBX. We ride our bikes to local places and take a compact car for destinations over two miles. This way we save on gas, and it even keeps us in shape for when we hit the sand in August :) The key is cutting back spending in other areas (ride your bike or walk, don't eat out as often, etc.), save up the excess funds you accumulate from doing so and don't touch them until you leave, and that way you won't have to take a "staycation" this year.

I agree with the above poster- Riding out a hurricane is a far  too dangerous decision to make just because of high gas prices, unless you fancy a burial at sea. If a storm is approaching, CLEAR OUT!

  2. You are even thinking of riding out a hurricane just because the price of gas is way up?   You should really rethink your priorities!  Start considering how much you value your life!  Chances are, if a hurricane were to make landfall close to your home, it would be at least a Category 3 by the time it got to that area.  It's not worth taking a chance on your safety; just to try and save a little on your fuel costs!  Even if you drove west of Raleigh or into Virginia, it would definitely be in your very best interests to do so!
