Outgoing Sri Lanka coach Trevor Bayliss suggests a strong management for the national side
Trevor Bayliss, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758’s outgoing coach on Thursday stressed that the cricket board should have a strong and stable administration so that players can completely focus on their game rather than getting distracted by political affairs.
Recently, four members of the Sri Lankan selection committee including the head selector Aravinda de Silva have resigned from their posts following their team’s defeat in the ICC World Cup 2011 final against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750.
Vice-captain of the Sri Lankan team, Mahela Jayawardene also resigned from his post along with the selectors while skipper Kumar Sangakkara had resigned a day before saying that new players should be given the responsibility to take up the role.
“On the field, we’ve done pretty well for past 18 months. Getting to the World Cup final itself is an achievement, though we lost (to India),” said Bayliss.
Bayliss added that off the field, the Sri Lankan team needs some improvements. Referring to the Australian team, he said that they have a strong management which becomes a great support for the team.
A temporary committee appointed by Sri Lankan sports minister since 2005 has been controlling cricket in the country. The minister picks the selectors who are not chosen for long time periods and can be replaced any time.
“I am constantly amazed how well the players do (on the field), with all the distractions put in front of them. It seems to be the sub-continent way. That’s a skill in itself,” said the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746-born Bayliss.
Former Sri Lanka cricketer Aravinda de Silva on Thursday dismissed the allegations that President of the country Mahinda Rajapaksa had any involvement in selection of the team.
He further revealed that he did not resign under any pressure rather he took the decision for the betterment of cricket in the country.
Sri Lanka have reached the World Cup final three times in their history. The won it for the first time against Australia in 1996 in Lahore but lost to the Kangaroos in 2007 in the Caribbean. In 2011, they again reached the final of the tournament but lost
to Asian rivals India.
