Water exists in a narrow range of temeperatures from freezing at 0 degrees C to boiling at 100 degrees C.  That means that all of water on earth is somewhere close to or between those two numbers....Unlike on land which can vary from -50+ (Antarctica) to 130+ F (Death Valley) water keeps temperatures fairl consistent.  

    Water has a high specific heat so it takes a lot of energy to raise its temperature.  It take 1 Calorie (1,000 food calories) to heat 1 litre of water at sea level...that is much much more than it takes to heat air so that is why water keeps temperatures in a more suitable range....
