Hey guys,

My friend is staying in the hotel and uses their open wireless network. Everything works fine and when he opens his outlook he recieves mail.

However, when he tries TO SEND mail, outlook seems to require SMTP address or some kind of access.

The hotel reception has no info on the SMTP of their network, so what can he do?

How does it work?

THANK YOU!

  1. Have him use the Webaccess portal (if it is setup) or have him VPN back into his office server.

SMTP stands for Simple Mail Transport Protocol.  Outbound email is always routed through an SMTP server.  Most SMTP servers require some sort of authentication (configurable in Outlook email account) before you are allowed to send email.

The hotel may not be allowed to give you any SMTP information, it would depend on who they get their internet access from.

  2. try turning off any secure settings in outlook express. the unsecured wifi may confuse these secure connections. also, try vpn to a home computer for more security and increased funtionality.
