Question:

Outside flowers in NC sandhills?

I live in the Sandhills of NC, near Ft. Bragg. After buying my first house I am trying to dig into planting flowers around my house to up the "curb side" appeal. However I can not seem to get anything to grow, or at least bloom. So does anyone live near this region that has had luck with growing certain types of plants can lend me a teaching hand? I am looking for colorful flowers that will come back year after year and can grow rather large.

Thanks to any help I can get.

  1. Hi neighbor.  MB, SC here.  You can grow lots of perennial things; gardenia, crepe myrtle, coleus (overwinter cuttings inside as water sprouts, ditto for) impatiens - ok, they're really annuals - camelia, day lillies, daisies, mums, 4:00's, EE's, cyperus (running out of breath) and a gazillion more things.

    want cuttings?

Grow what you love, experiment, have fun.

  2. Your best solution would be to visit a local garden center or professional landscape supply. (Not the big box store like Lowes, Walmart and Home Depot)

Below is a link to a few in your area or try John Deere Landscapes
