Ouya Kickstarter crowd-sourcing ends – Video Games Update
The Ouya Kickstarter campaign has come to a halt and the project has managed to raise over $8.5 million from crowd-sourcing.
The Kickstarter page for the $99 Android powered console took the gaming world by storm as the project managed to go over its required goal of $950,000 on the first day. Because of the sudden popularity of the upcoming console, the Ouya Team has stated that
it will use the additional funding amount to add more features to Ouya.
Yesterday the team released pictures of the console which shows that Ouya is no bigger than a Rubik’s Cube and the controller seems like a hybrid of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 controllers. The Ouya team has announced that Ouya will support up to four
controllers at a time. This news opens up many possibilities for ports of popular co-op games on the console.
As far as developer support goes, Ouya is doing pretty good as the console already has the video game streaming service OnLive backing it. Square Enix has also announced that it will be supporting Ouya and has announced the remake of Final Fantasy 3 which
is being developed from the ground up exclusively for the console.
Robert Bowling, former Infinity Ward Lead, has also announced that his new studio Robotoki is also developing an exclusive game for Ouya called the Human Element. Currently the Ouya team is in talks with Namco to get their support. The Ouya team has encouraged
gamers to head on to Namco’s Facebook page and tell them about the games that they would want to be on Ouya.
The founder of the project, Julie Uhrman, has stated that the Ouya team has been ‘blown away’ by all the support from gamers everywhere and they believe that the Kickstarters’ success just shows people’s interest in the console. “People are ready for something
new, and Ouya is that thing," stated Uhrman in an interview with Joystiq.
Now that the Kickstarter finding has ended the Ouya team will start concentrating on developing the console and ensuring that it gets proper developer support before it launches. The team has also announced that the official website for Ouya will soon go
live and the team will start taking additional pre-orders before the console launches in 2013.
