Ouya signs up with OnLive – Video Games Update
It seems that the team behind Ouya will not have to worry about the lack of games for the upcoming console as they have signed a deal with the cloud gaming service OnLive.
Gamers were predicting doom for Ouya when Google announced that there would not be any Google Play store support for the $99 Android powered console. The news came as a shock as a lot of gamers were assuming that Google would back the console as it was ultimately
using Android as the OS.
Today it has been revealed that Ouya will not only be really cheap, but will also boast a massive games library at launch. The company has signed a contract with the cloud gaming service OnLive which will bring hundreds of games from over eighty different
publishers.
The problem with this news is that it’s still cloud gaming and even though the addition of OnLive is very much welcome, it doesn’t change the fact that Ouya still does not have any games of its own. It is unlikely that gamers would buy Ouya just for OnLive
when they can just get the OnLive set-top box and controller separately.
Another downside is that OnLive is not really that popular yet because of the insanely fast broadband it requires in order to work without any lag. This means that Ouya will only be useful to gamers with access to fast internet, but for everyone else the
OnLive feature in Ouya will be a waste of space.
The Ouya team has also revealed the controller for the android powered console. The console seemed to be heavily inspired by that of the Xbox 360 with the Analog sticks in similar positions. A smart move as chances are the Ouya will only sell in the US so
the team has copied the controller of the best selling console in the country.
Many gamers are calling out the Ouya team on their promise of free games as the OnLive service on Ouya would not be free although every game will have a free thirty minute demo. Currently Ouya only has a single exclusive game, Human Element which is being
developed by Robotoki. The Kickstarter page for the console has managed to raise over $5.6 million with 11 days still to go. The Ouya console is set to be released by March 2013.
