Oven cleaning h**l. Please advise!!!?

I have been renting a house for the past couple of yrs and during that time have cleaned the oven using various sprays etc. But for the past 6 months every time I use the oven it sets off the smoke alarm and fills the kitchen with smoke. I think the problem is the grime on the roof of the oven (on and around filaments) which you presumably can't spray. I'm moving out soon so need to leave oven super clean. Would a steam cleaner be the best solution?

Please help!!!

Thanks

  1. Get a man in. It's about 40 quid around here and worth every penny. http://www.ovenu.co.uk/

  2. Spray them with no Fume Easy off , make sure that the stove is unplugged when you clean them out , I hope that you can get a self cleaning stove where you're going , I hate cleaning the oven!

  3. why not turn the oven on to the highest temp and let it burn off for an hour.

  4. C**t bang degreaser spray and wait 1 hour them  and then respray the oven and wait for 30 min.  a steam cleaners depend on the pressure of the steam the cheap ones might as well boil a kettle. You have to care full to remember ovens are designed to cope with a little steam but not direct pressure near the filaments. remember not to mix chemicals as some can react to produce toxic gases.

  5. When I moved into my house the oven which is well and truly over 20 years old - try 27 and it still works but it had lots of baked on gunk on it

This is what I did - it did not get it totally shining but a big improvement it was

I bought a concentrated orange cleaner - you can buy them from a cleaning supplier - not the supermarket.

Paint or spray it on neat - dont dilute it and leave. It is good also to warm the oven a bit first. A scraper as in a paint or glass scraper is also a good tool to help loosen the baked on stuff and also a good scrubber. Repeat if needed. Works great on all surfaces including the glass in the door. Its also lovely and gentle on hands, doesnt irritate the nose and sting the skin as its corrosion free. If you are sensitive to chemicals as I am this is good as I can cope with it.

To clean the shelves and supports you can also use it neat if you wish or do as I did, soak them in the laundry tub with some good quality laundry soaker, I used an amway one which has enzymes in it , a bit expensive but really good, use a wire brush to gently scrub them clean an rinse. Air dry.

I like this method as I can use my oven as soon as I like without having to switch it on and heat to get the caustic smells of other cleaners out. The kitchen smells so nice and fresh too.
