  1. It seems you're pretty serious about digital photography. If that's true you'll find yourself in need of a proper image manipulation program sooner or later. Programs like Adobe Photoshop Elements are affordable and should be adequate for photo editing.

Have you tried The GIMP? It works a little like Photoshop and is absolutely free: http://www.gimp.org/

You can try adjusting the highlights and shadows (as a whole or selectively) with curves or you can make a neutral density gradient. How much is recoverable is dependent on the camera's dynamic range and how severely clipped the highlights and shadows are.

Here are a two tutorials to start you off:

  2. Picnik is all you need,  just use it correctly !

  3. Hi Eleanor

Just use the contrast / saturation brust and pass it lightly over the dark areas. Make sure you use a diffused brush just like using an airbrush.

In the overexposed, you can apply the gamma effect using the same diffused brush effect. Here, you are removing contrast and enhancement as opposed to putting some in the dark area. :-))

  4. If U are very familiar with photoshop, i'd say use that to edit your pic. But if U can, re-shoot that photo.  Bcos if U have an eye for perfection like myself, U may end up not very happy with what you might have edited.      God luck.

  5. In photoshop you are going to work with layers.  One layer will have to be dodged and the other burned to get some sort of matching lighting.  Kind of one those pretty cool 'bifocal' filters (graduated)

check this tutorial and see if it helps

    Good luck!
