Question:

Over tightening an oil filter?

Is there any problems you can cause by over tightening a filter. Today, I made a mess and my hands were covered in oil and grease so I had to rely on a filter wrench to get the filter on. I guesstimated the appropriate tightness, but I'm sure I went a little past the 1/4 turn past hand tight rule. I did not gorilla tighten it down, but its probably snugger than is recommended.

Any possible problems/damages?

thanks

  1. Crank up the engine and see if it leaks.  If there are not leaks, carry on.  You may learn how to cuss when you go to remove it at the next change.

  2. it could leak and be difficult to take off the next time.

  3. Probably not. You could possibly strip the threads if its way too tight, but it does not sound like you did that. Just make sure when you remove the filter, it has the gasket on it. Sometimes when the filter is to tight the gasket will stick to the engine and cause problems if you leave it on.

  4. Just hard to get off, that's all.

  5. Other than the fact it may be a little hard to get off next time, it should be fine. Biggest worry is if you tighten it so much it pushes out the o-ring seal and leaks all over.

  6. just harder to take off next time

  7. yeah it can mess up. it can leave the gasket on next time. the filter doesn't need to be torqued but the oil filter drain plug does. just dont strip it.

  8. Ck for leaks, Shouldn't be a problem,  Do not sweat it. If your worried

just let it cool off and loosen it up , clean it and your hands and retightend it per the directions. Relax I take off Gorilla tightened filters all the time .
