Overall...has the media crossed the line?

ESPN is even reporting on the A-Rod divorce situation. NBC News had a reporter poised outside their apartment. It seems even previously "legitimate" news sources are bending to match the sleezy tabloid media. Do you think the "media" has crossed the line, to bring the public news about celebrities?

I agree with Finger... what sense would it make for news channels to air really important world & local news when majority of viewers are only interested in the tabloid c**p?

They need to stay in business too...

they definatley have crossed line, especially when they lie about a celebrity just to make a story.

This is a tough one. Sunday night, when the story broke about the pending divorce, I put in two paragraphs at the bottom of the Yankees' story in the sports section, knowing that the parts about the divorce, Lenny Kravitz and Madonna were going to attract some attention. Didn't feel too good about it, but celebrities do attract attention and readers. That's why I had every confidence that this one was going to be over-covered. I think in comparison, I guess I showed some restraint.

There are plenty of important events happening every minute, I don't see how the life of Angelina Jolie matters to me, or why it should matter to the thousands of people who actually pay money to read about their lives.

It's stupid at best.

I don't think it's the media that's to blame though, they wouldn't show it if nobody cared. It's the fools who have too much time on their hands and get joy off of celebrities being repeatedly humiliated and ostracized.

I long ago tired of hearing the sleeze.  I now turn the channel or switch off when the report comes in.  It amazes me that mainstream media seems to think this is important news or that they get more viewers with it.  I guess when media is loosing viewers they will do anything to keep their "share" up. It is also hypocritical for the media to criticize the ethics of celebrities in their bad taste, then make sure they report as much of the video or verbiage as they legally can.

Great question! Hate hearing that tabloid junk on one of NBC news business cable channel. They lose view as soon as those types of stories start.
