Overall run of 49er class at 2011 Perth ISAF Sailing World Championship in Australia
The host country will be delighted to see the final results of 49er Worlds because local heroes, Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen, have won the category gold medal after putting up an impressive show at the 2011 Perth ISAF Sailing World Championship. The
Aussie pair clinched 91 points to claim the gold medal and add another title to their career record.
The Australians had a superb run from the start with three bullets. Despite clinching a third place in the medal race, they managed to win the 49er class after sailing in 16 races, including a discard. The duo grabbed a 21-point lead over the second placed,
Peter Burling and Blair Tuke of New Zealand, to ensure their successful run in the world championship.
The Kiwi pair of Peter Burling and Blair Tuke also showed a marvellous comeback and finished on second podium spot with 112 points to claim the silver medal. The pair came to sail on the final day as the fourth placed team but gave an outstanding performance
during the final showdown. They managed to secure a second spot in the double point medal race and finally occupied the overall second position.
On third podium finish were Denmark’s Emil Toft Nielsen and Simon Toft Nielsen, who could not sail up to the mark in the final races and tumbled down. They clinched the same net points as the Kiwis but in the overall points table, they were far behind them.
Another reason of their fall from second to third podium position was a low finish in the medal race, as they earned 10 points.
Fifth placed, Allan Noerregaard Christensen and Peter Lang of Denmark won the medal race but this victory could not help them improve their final results in the leaderboard. However, they have qualified for the upcoming Olympic Games in London.
Overall, 14 countries have made their way into the 2012 London Olympics, along with the host nation, Great Britain, from the 49er Class. These 14 countries include Australia, Austria, Croatia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Ireland, New
Zealand, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Sweden and United States.
After producing 15 days of tremendous sailing under outstanding weather during 2011 International Sailing Federation (ISAF) Sailing World Championships, the Australian waters have now calmed down.
Thousands of spectators came to watch the championship, as the top sailors gathered at Perth with only one goal in mind, to win the title. Weather forecast was, as usual, Perth-style with a strong gusty breeze over the race course. The world saw some spectacular
sailing moments at Perth, as teams from all around the globe participated with their full might in all the international sailing classes.
