Question:

Overcrowded Tank?

I have a 125L tank, it's quite large. It's about 10 weeks old. These are my current inhabitants:

1 Altum Angelfish (Very young)

2 Honey Gouramis

1 Three-spot Gourami

1 Small loach

3 Platies

3 Zebra Danios

5 Neon Tetras ( I was told that if I add a baby angelfish with these neon tetras at the same time they will be okay)

My tank is relatively large. Ammonia titrate levels at 0ppm. 10% water change twice a week. Feed twice a day, blood worms ones a week. Temperature 26-27C.

I was just wondering, am I doing everything correctly, as I'm a novice, and is there anything I need to improve, or do. And, is there any useful advice you could give me.

Many thanks, and kind regards

Andrew

  1. sounds like your doing everything right! keep it up!

  2. its good dont listin to everyone else u can have a lot of fish if u want just do a lot of water changes

  3. Your tank is about 33 US gallons and it is poorly stocked.   The angelfish (altum) needs a tall style tank that is at least 30 gallons/120l.  You shouldn't be keeping gourami with angels, either.... you're going to have aggression problems.  Loaches typically need to be kept in groups of at least 3 (min), but 5 or more is usually best.  Also, depending upon the type of loach you have, your problems could be compounded!!  If you have a clown loach..... you've got "big" problems.  Clown loaches must be kept in groups and need very large tanks......  Zebra danios should be kept in groups of at least 6 and so should neon tetras.

Your tank is relatively large if compared to a tiny bowl, but it is far too small for all the fish you have.

  4. Basically, it sounds okay.  The angel and 3-spot gourami will both get fairly large, but I don't see any real problem there.  The honey gouramis can be timid and may get picked on by the 3-spot later.  You don't say how large the 3-spot is now.  Depends on species of loach, read previous comments about clown loaches.  If it's a weather loach or kuhli or similar, you're okay.  Danios and tetraa should both be in schools of at least 6.

I'd recommend a small species of plecostomus and maybe a couple cory catfish.  The cories also do better in a small school, and if you have a good aeration/filtration system you could do that.

Since you've only had the tank and fish a short time, and are new at this, I would not recommend adding more fish now, though.  Keep up on the weekly maintenance and water changes, and you shouldn't have any problems.

  5. EXCELLENT!

The combination of fish is good and everything you are doing (feeding, checking ammonia, changing water) is all good.

Your tank is definitely not crowded. Every fish, with the exception of goldfish, needs only 1 gallon (which is what I heard...I could be wrong). Now goldfish need 5 gallons each.

I just thought that would be something good to know...Anyway, enjoy your new tank! Keep up the good work!

  6. That's alot of fish for such a new aquarium.

    You have 0 ammonia and 0 nitrates/nitrites?

    what's the question?

Looks to me like you got it all together!

I can do nothing more here:)
