Overdose beaten at Baden-Baden
Overdose lost his unbeaten record in a strange race in Germany.
The pride of Hungary, who his fans call the “Budapest Bullet”, had been undefeated in his previous 14 career starts, but was firing blanks in the Group Two Goldene Peitsche at Baden-Baden. Trainer Josef Roszival booked Christophe Soumillon, who had ridden the horse once before, but the horse was clearly not happy at the reunuion.
Overdose was drawn wide, in stall 13, and was extremely fractious at the start, rearing up and dumping his jockey on the ground a couple of times behind the stalls. When he finally consented to be loaded into the stalls it looked to be business as usual as Overdose was just off the lead set by Mood Music.
Overdose took up the lead at roughly halfway but was almost immediately in trouble and was dropping through the field in the last two furlongs as Amico Fritz came through to win from Contact and Gilt Edge Girl.
At Deauville the British raiders hit the target again when Swiss Diva won the Group Three Prix de Meautry for David Elsworth. Ioritz Mendizabal, who had already won the Group Three Prix Quincey on Elusive Wave, had Swiss Diva in the lead from the start and the filly – who had won a Listed race at Deauville earlier this month – never saw another horse as she picked up the pace in the last quarter-mile for a cosy win.
Monitor Closely was still leading into the home straight in the Group Two Grand Prix de Deauville, but he was being monitored very closely by Davy Bonilla on the Freddie Head-trained Marinous, who took the lead up with about a furlong to run and then held off the challenge of Barry Hills’s Redwood by a half-length.
At Goodwood, Tropical Paradise carried topweight to win the Group Three Supreme Stakes.
