Question:

Overhand Serving?

Okay, well this is a problem I've been having for years. I consider myself a pretty decent volleyball player, been playing for 6 years(I'm 13), and I have been on my middle school's team. I have no problem with setting, passing, and hitting because I'm an outside hitter. But I've always had a problem with overhand serving. If I underhand serve then I have no problem at all. I always practice overhand but it's difficult and always ends up short or goes the wrong way. I take private lessons and go to camps but it's still a weak serve. Tryouts are in the middle of August, so I have about 5 and a half months. I don't understand why I can't serve too well, because I'm a hitter with a lot of power. I really want to get a nice, hard serve before high school starts, I'm really determined to make JV as a freshmen.

Any tips?

  1. make sure you have a good toss.

my coach says to put it on the shelff.

barley trow it up and as soon as it's comeing back down hit ittt.

also if your still having troubles. . . ....

make sure your feet r n the right spott and your shoulders r facing where you want to hit itt.

  2. dont chuck the ball to hign, like a ft and a half above your head, have a firmer wrist, you could be losing power because your wrsit is flopy

  3. when serving make sure your toes are pointed to where you want the ball to go. When tossing the ball up . Toss the ball up so if it were to land on the floor it lands in front of your right foot(assuming you are right handed)if you are left handed make sure it lands in front of your left foot.

    - The ball may be going the wrong way because of the way ur toes are pointed or what your shoulders and squared to . Always try to square your shoulders to the net or point your toes to ur target and try to square ur shoulder to them. Now when following through dont let ur hand cross ur body because that causes for the ball to go across the court unless you want it to go there but usually you dont do when following through dont think about it and just let your hand naturally fall.

P.s when contacting the ball make sure you contact at the top of the ball.

    GOOD LUCK

  4. I had the same problem (still do, kinda) I serve and it hits off my thumb and it goes to the left and nearly goes over the line. try a jump or floater serve. I'm doing better as a floater

  5. make sure you have a good toss. It should land right in front of your foot if you let it drop. keep your wrist stiff some girls snap their wrists back and forth when they serve and it doesnt go over. you dont have to hit it as hard as you can, just so it goes over. make sure you hit the ball at its highest point with the palm of your hand not a fist. try to serve to the middle of the court at first then work on hitting spots

  6. 1) Focus on your toss

            - Toss it in front of whatever hand you serve with

            - Toss it with as little spin as possible

            - Make your toss high so you have enough time to get a good swing.

    2) Focus on contact

            -  You want to hit the ball as if you are giving your friend a high-five

    3) Focus on the direction your arm is going

            - Make sure you swing straight!

  7. if your right handed....

toss the ball up with your left...it should hit the ground beside your leading foot...

try and get a high(ish) toss and hit the ball in the middle back...hit it with an OPEN hand though

ask your coach about it if u can and see wat he/she has to say...seek advice from other players or even the guys if you have too...watch evryones technique and try it out for yourself...

B  alance-make sure you are holding the ball level

E  levation-toss it over your head

E  diquite- make sure your feet are pointing to where

you want to hit it and toss!

F ollowthrough- after you hit it (with the lower palm of your

hand) your hitting hand should be bent at the wrist

and your hitting arm should be at your side

  9. It seems like the toss and the swing are covered well above this answer.

I will stress one thing differently.  The footwork.  You want to plant your right foot.  Do not step with your right foot if you are right handed.  PLANT your right foot.  If you want to take a step, you can take a little step with your left foot.  Try not to take that step if you can avoid it as well.  If you move your right foot, your serve will end up short.  The power of your serve is from using the muscles in the body and not just your arm.  If you plant your right foot, you will be using the muscles on your body plus your arm.  If you move your right foot, you will just be using your arm muscles since your body and your arm are moving together.

If your toss is wrong, you will also end up short or in the wrong direction.
