I have a Gateway Laptop. It is a little over 3 years old. It is overheating within 10 minutes of turning on. I do have viruses on my computer...could that have something to do with that. I have tried to clean out the dust...but it didn't work. I also have tried proping it up when I use it. Could you tell me what to buy/do? I do have plans on buying a Mac Book in the next year and a half...but I need a temporary fix.

  1. I don't think you need a temporary fix, I think you need a permanent repair. First, find a copy of the manual for the computer. If you don't have one go to the library where they have computers (or wherever) and see if you can find a PDF copy of it. Try the gateway web site at:

    http://support.gateway.com/support/drive...

This will answer your question about where the fan is located. It will also tell you where the battery is and might help answer other questions.

As a matter of fact even if your computer is not under warranty, I suggest you contact the manufacturer.  I looked up Gateway Laptops and there is a recall on certain batteries. The general support toll-free number is: 1-800-846-2000. The website also has an email support form at this web address:

They can tell you what must be done. You have a safety issue that could cost more than what your computer is worth. If you think you have viruses then you shouldn't even turn the laptop on. When you do it will allow the virus (if there is one or more) to do its damage. Not knowing what the virus(es) are I wouldn't take any chances without some professional support.

If you need to have a tech work on it, try to find someone local who is honest and not necessarily affiliated with a Big Box store.

  2. its not the viruses, its dust, but u need to clean the ventilation fan, where u hear most sound

  3. ok do not set your laptop on your bed couch or even your lap it needs to sit on a solid surface that way it has all of its vents and fans open and have good air flow you can buy laptop stands that have built in fans that are made to cool your laptop off you can get them at staples or even walmart for less then $30 that should keep your laptop cool enough to run unless there is a more serious problem and I dont think a virus would cause a computer to overheat

  4. just what ever you do dont buy a mac coz thats just the worst thing to do trust me m8 they over heat aswel stay with laptops when u come to buy one try go for a non slim one like one thats not stupidly thin uno

  5. If you are running on AC, remove the battery and see if it runs cooler. MyDells heat up that way. Viruses do not create heat, like in the human body's fever state.

I would run a good virus program such as AVG anti-virus ( Google it ) to get rid of them anyway.

    Good luck,

    DW
