I may need to stay in a shelter in 2 days cause i cant stay here at my friends and i am a bit confused here.

On this site it says ''case managment'' and goes to another site explaining how to help someone get a job while having a place to stay.but it also says, on the main page that its an overnight shelter.i dont understand which it is and if they differ.they sound like different situations.i just need a place to shower and sleep so i can get a job then save a bit to rent a room somewhere.also, i worry about the bag i have and if the shelter in san luis obispo is safe.it seems like it would be safe cause this is a small town with not so much violence..

please help..

  1. I would def go check out the shelter if u can get there if possible dont take anything that u dont want to get stolen maybe someone will be able to hold ur stuff if needed for a while till u get back on ur feet

when u get there see if soem one can help u get a job to get u on ur feet

  2. There are 3 different services listed on that page 1.  Day Care 2. Overnight Shelter 3.  Case management...kind of like a menu with different things to pick from on it.  An overnight shelter is basicly a place to sleep at night and maybe take a shower possibly have breakfast or supper or both. Normally a person needs to leave by 8AM or so and can't come back till 4PM or so   Usually you can only stay a very short time.  Usually you sleep in a room with a lot of cots or bunk beds.   You might also check and see if you have another friend or two where you could stay for 2 or 3 days or a week at a time to give you a bit more time to get a job abd a place to stay.

Any shelter may have and probably will have one or 2 ppl who do not respect other ppl's property so if a friend can hang into your bag for you and you can just take minimum suff with you that would be better. Otherwise plan to use it for a pillow and keep it right with you at all times.

Here are some other possibilities.  I don't know your age or why you are out of a place to stay but if you happen to be under 22 or 23 please give a call to 800 RUNAWAY which helps not just runaways but all young ppl from preteens to early 20's who may find themselves on the street or needing shelter.  They have some safe places to stay available.    If you are under 18 Covenant House 800 999 9999 may also have a safe place in your area.   If you are old enough to work legally call the local motels and ask if they will trade work (room cleaning, desk clerk,  maintenance for a place to stay.  You may have to make a lot of calls and go beyond the one town but often they will do this and often include a very small salary.   That would give you a room of your own where you could lock the door and keep you and your stuff safer.

I see a Monastery of the Risen Christ listed in San Luis Obispo with men's and women's residences.  It could be worth a call to see if they could provide short term shelter or know somewhere that can.   The nearest Salvation Army probably has a shelter too.

Try a serach here for homeless and see other answers and questions.   I know I have done some that had a lot of info on how to cope with possible homelessness but w/o having an idea of your situation I hesitate to dump all that info on you and maybe confuse you more.   If you do a search you can maybe fnd some things hat are close to your own circumstances.    You are also welcome to email me.

  3. an overnight shelter is one that is open at night only, for people to haver a place to sleep. There is no one there during the day -- the site may be used for other purposes during business hours.
