  1. Buy travellers cheques

    valis passport

    visa fees

    jabs

take your visa card and debit card with you.

    enogh spending money.

  2. You'll have to check with your home country on how much a passport costs, which, by the way, you should apply for now.  If you're an American it can be a long wait for a passport.  Meals are very cheap if you eat local food.  Beware of "street meat."  It's done in many a foreigner.  Try to eat meat only in places that look relatively clean and have the possibility of refrigerating the meat they are not using.  They should also have running water so you know they can try to keep things clean.  Eating breads and noodles from the street is usually okay.  Drink Coke with your meals to help fight against food poisoning and it's effects if you do get it.  Western chain restaurants are about the same price as home.  Take how ever much money you plan to spend on souvenirs and such.  The amount you take will depend on how long you plan to spend in China.  Things are relatively cheap in China unless they're imported or you are buying them at the site of the tourist attraction.  You can buy "I climbed The Great Wall" T-shirts in markets all over China much cheaper than you can usually buy them at The Wall.

Most places do not take major cradit cards or traveler's checks so plan to have cash when shopping or eating out.  Make sure you have your passport with you any time you want to exchange money.  When you are ready to leave China you will have to change your money out at the airport since foreigners are not generally allowed to exchange yuan for their country's money themselves anymore.
