Overstayed visa in USA any problems getting back in?

I overstayed in USA by 6 months in 1986 my old passport was stamped on entry & exit. What are the chances they will have a record from that long ago and if so will it be a problem getting back in? I am going for a 5 day stay. I cant remember if the I-94 was in force then? I left voluntarily and was not in any kind of trouble ( i had a 3 month visa). What comes up when passport put through system @ customs (i have a new passport/new address etc). Is it a big risk to try go back without declaring overstay? Any advice welcome.

  1. Whatever you do don't hide anything. The enforcement climate in the US has heated up since 9/11. Even with a visa for entry it is still up to the officer at entry whether you get in and for how long you can stay.

  2. If you tell them, they may not let you back in.

If you don't tell them, they may throw you in jail.

Why not call the US Embassy where you are and ASK before it becomes an issue?

  3. Well, given the length of time it's been since your entry, you won't need to worry about any visa ineligibilities, but first you need to qualify for a B1/B2 visa. But, the only way you'd be in trouble on your old overstay would be if you lied about it.
