I was driving in the left hand lane (NSW) on a freeway approx 100Km/hr - speed limit was 100km/hr. My father was in the passenger seat and informs me that because i was in the left hand lane (doing the speed limit) and the car in the right hand lane who was doing about 80km/hr, i was driving illegally because i overtook him...i disagree.............i did not change lanes....he told me i should have pulled in behind this driver in the right hand lane..surely this is incorrect.

  1. Are you in the USA?  Cause I would imagine there's a big difference.

  2. wrong daddy wrong

  3. no way, you didnt do anything wrong, as long as you were in your lane and he was in yours its not illegal.

It would only be illegal if you were in the same lane and tried to overtake on the left hand side.

    Hope this helps

  4. RTA road users handbook

    page 90........ and I quote

"You must overtake on the right unless a vehicle is waiting to turn right or if you and the other vehicle are travelling in marked lanes. In these instances you may overtake on the left side if it is safe".

but be aware.. they are always changing the rules and ignorance is no excuse. I thought he was right as well becuase it used to be that way. I am ex-military and rules used to be different from state to state
