Overusing cell phones?

I have a cell phone and I think i get my moneys worth out of it, but I think that it is not necessarily a good thing for people to always be in contact with everyone. It bugs me when im spending time with someone and they are having a completely different conversation with someone else via texting and they dont even think they are being rude.

These days when a teens car runs out of gas or gets a flat they just call their parents instead of problem solving and fixing the problem themselves.

What do you think of the effects cell phones are having on our society?

  1. Its part of the faster pace of life.  I dont think its bad, just different.  Then again, I am part of it.  I know its not so much with teens, but with a lot of adults today our lives are so busy that you really have to multi task a lil bit.

As far as the teens just calling...  if they didnt have a phone do you really think they would try to change it themselves or look for a pay phone?  That problem isnt the phones, that problem is the parents not teaching their kids that stuff.

But I just said something thats important here.  Payphones.  Notice how they are disappearing?  Yeah, sure our parents didnt have all these cell phones, but there were plenty of pay phones and always someone around the corner that you knew to be a trusted adult.  Those things just flat out arent there today.  Say what you will about kids and phones, Id much rather my child have a phone than walk around for hours looking for a pay phone or a familur face.

As far as the over all effects?  It makes multi tasking a lot easier.  I guess that makes us busier.  But every generation has it's own changes.  I mean, how many older people asked the same thing about the telephone in the first place?  the car?  Elvis?  computers?  microwave?  All of those things involve people changing in ways that the older generation didnt approve of, but looking back, no one gives it a second thought.  And with the exception of Elvis, they all involved things that made life simpler, or the people lazier.

  2. If my teen ran out of gas my answer would be "Take the gas can I am sure you had the foresight to purchase and walk yourself to the nearest gas station, which you can find using the map I am certain you were wise enough to buy.  Then fill it up with gas and pay for it with the emergency cash I know you have the good sense to keep hidden in the car just for these unforeseen circumstances."

  3. All this new technology only makes people more dependent and unable/unwilling to do things themselves. It's the corporations' way of keeping the people down; give 'em gizmos, and they'll be too busy with all their new toys to wake up and realize how badly the corporations of this country are s******g them over.

  4. I think its having a terrible effect on society.  People can't go 5 minutes without being on the phone.  Everyone is becoming more rude and self absorbed.  I have a cell phone and i keep it in my car in case i break down because i have a long drive to work everyday, that's all i use it for!
