Ovill McKenzie blames Tony Bellew for usage of drugs – Boxing news
Ovill McKenzie has blamed that the British national Light Heavyweight contender Tony Bellew, who is currently the Commonwealth champion, of taking drugs before their 12-round rematch on July 16, 2011.
The two fighters will be face to face for the Commonwealth (British Empire) Light Heavyweight title at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, United Kingdom.
While addressing a press conference McKenzie said, “I think you are on something and hope the British Boxing Board of Control check you out. You got up with that look in your eye. I’m a doorman and know that look - you’re on drugs, I swear to God.’”
The two fighters went against each other in December 2010. The 28-year-old, Bellew won the technical knockout decision over McKenzie. The time was 2:46 when the referee Phil Edwards stepped in to halt the bout.
Although Bellew won the bout but he went down to the canvas a couple of times as he could not predict the right hand punches of McKenzie directly to his head. Afterwards, Bellew made a strong comeback into the fight and smashed McKenzie through a left punch
to his head in the eighth round.
The referee declared the fight off after examining McKenzie’s position as he did not look comfortable going against him for the remaining four rounds. It was really surprising for McKenzie to see that Bellew recovered very quickly after getting knocked down
for a couple of times during the fight. McKenzie revealed after the fight that Bellew was on drugs.
Bellew on the other hand declined of using any type of performance enhancing drugs. He declared it as the backhanded flattery. Bellew said he is clean and he can go for any type of drug test to prove his innocence.
The orthodox stance light heavyweight, Bellew is now coming to the ring after 15 consecutive wins and he is still an undefeated prospect in the boxing world.
McKenzie on the other hand should not underestimate his rival and try to learn from his past fights so he could avoid repeating his past performances.
