Question:

Ovulation kit did not show LH surge, but I had mittelschmerz. Why?

I tested my urine every day after a 4 hour hold...nothing. On exactly day 14 of my cycle, I experienced mittelschmerz, which I have experienced every month ever since I was young -- so I know what it is and how to recognize it. So why didn't the ovulation predictor show an LH surge 1 or 2 days before the mittelschmerz? We've been having s*x every other day anyway, but still I'm wondering if something really is wrong with me. Any ideas?

  1. Are you testing once or twice a day with OPKs? You really should test twice because sometimes you can miss your surge.

And although you experience O pains, that doesn't necessarily mean you have/will ovulate.  Sometimes our bodies prepare too, but don't because of whatever reasons.

  2. Ok, I looked up the definition of mittelschmerz and now I am prepared to answer you.

The ovulation predictor, predicts ovulation before it happens so that you can have sperm waiting for the egg when it is released from the ovary. Therefore, the opk was correct. As long as you had s*x one of those two days that the opk told you to you have a better than average chance of getting pregnant. If you did it on both days, your chances are probably a little better.

  3. you should be testing with your second urine of the day around 10am...I agree with the other lady in that you can sometimes feel like your ovulating but your in fact not...

  4. I had that happen once.  My doctor told me that I may have had a bad strip.  I didn't get pregnant then either.  Some people use 2 test strips around the time that they are expecting the LH surge.  I know, this could get costly....  Months later, I found out I had endometriosis.  Just had the surgery for it this past Monday.  So in 2 days, I start the test strips again.  Hopefully, we'll have good luck from here on out.

What your doctor has told you about the middleshmertz pain, could actually be endometriosis pain.  I would have it every month (middleschmertz) around ovulation as well (when I wasn't on the pill).  I guess I'll find out after the next week or so since I'm on day 3 right now.

  5. Well, when I use opk's I test twice a day.  Usually around 10 am and again around 4pm.  My LH surge is SO short that if I don't test twice a day I would miss it.  For example, if I ONLY tested at 4pm every day, I would have missed my surge last month because I got my positive on my 9:30am test and by 4pm it was completely gone.  So it's possible you missed it!  Also, mittelschmerz can happen a few days before ovulation and/or during ovulation, so if you've just experienced the pains now keep testing, it's possible you could still get your surge!  Ovulation is not an exact science nor is there any rhyme or reason to it.  Sometimes our bodies gear up to ovulate and for whatever reason the egg is not released and then our body will try again a few days later.  Other times, there won't be an egg released at all (anovulation), and your ovulation day can vary from month to month as well.
