Owen Coyle: Harry Redknapp “perfect fit” for England job
Bolton Wanderers manager Owen Coyle has described his counterpart Harry Redknapp as ‘perfect fit’ for the England job. The current England manager Fabio Capello has already declared that he will leave the post after the European Championship.
Owen was talking to the media before Spurs visit to Bolton at Reebok Stadium on Saturday.
The Italian’s contract will expire in two years time and he does not wish to extend it further; however, most of the football pundits tip the Tottenham manager to get the prestigious job.
Owen’s side will face the Lilywhites this weekend and he has described the Englishman perfect for the England job. His team will have to face the high-flying Tottenham side after they demolished current title-holders Inter Milan.
The Bolton boss said: “If Mr Capello is going to leave at some stage, then Harry Redknapp should be the next England manager for me. It won’t go down well with the Tottenham fans but if England is looking for a manager who is passionate and knows his football and is English he is the outstanding candidate.”
Being a thorough professional, Redknapp will not be looking further than beating Bolton in their next match. He knows two years is a long time and anything can happen during this period. In addition to this, Harry has never hidden his desire to become England’s manager. He has been linked with the job in the past as well but was overlooked in favour of Capello.
Speaking of Coyle’s comments Harry said: “It's very nice for him to say that but it's two years down the line. You know what this game's like: you're flavour of the month this month; next month, they want to bin you. That's football. If I'm doing great people'll talk about me; if I'm not doing well I'll be out, forgotten.”
Redknapp’s Champions League performance and the way he has transformed Gareth Bale into an excellent commodity has improved his chances of becoming England’s next manager. In no time, he has become an automatic choice for the England fans and players themselves. Coyle is one of the biggest fans of Redknapp. He thinks that the former West Ham United and Portsmouth manager has sufficient credentials to take the miserable English team to new heights.
While the current Italian manager has seemed to struggle at times with language and failed to communicate properly with the players, this will not be a problem with the English manager, should he be in charge. However, it will be hard for the Tottenham fans to let go of their manager as Harry has transformed an average side into a side that is now competing at the highest level.
Final Verdict
It remains to be seen if Redknapp is appointed as the next England manager or not, but no matter what one cannot predict the level of success he might be able to achieve. Some of his strengths will not be utilized at international level, as he is an expert when it comes to dealing shrewd transfers; however, this is not required in International Football. He has signed several talented players for West Ham, Portsmouth and Spurs, but he cannot become a great manager unless he wins a major competition such as the Champions League or Premier League.
