Owen Hargreaves, Michael Carrick training with Manchester United
Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves has resumed training with the club’s first team after a lengthy layoff, it was revealed on Friday.
The 29-year-old has not started a game for two years after undergoing surgery in 2008 to try and correct a longstanding knee problem.
His last appearance for the Red Devils was back in May when he made a three-minute substitute appearance against Sunderland, but he is nearing full fitness.
Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson Ferguson told his club’s official website today that: “Owen trained with the first team. I was surprised how good he was looking. It's an extra string to our bow, bringing him in at this time. After being out for so long,
we'll obviously have to monitor him and see how he's going to progress in the next few weeks — it's good to see him back.”
Selection headache
Ferguson added that Hargreaves’ impressive showing in training sessions he has been able to take part in so far could give the Scot a selection headache.
He said that: "Because he's been out for so long you have to see whether there's going to be a relapse. That's the first thing on our mind at the moment. But having watched him in training, if he continues that way he's going to give me another selection
problem."
Meanwhile, Ferguson also revealed that fellow injury victim Michael Carrick is back training with the squad once again and could soon make a comeback to first-team action after three weeks on the sidelines with an Achilles problem.
He said that: “Michael started training last week. He had that injection on his Achilles to settle it down. It was nothing serious, just one of those niggling little problems you can get with your Achilles, particularly at the start of the season when grounds
are firm. But he's fine."
