Owen Wright and Joel Parkinson enter Round 3 of Rip Curl Pro Search – 2011 ASP World Tour
The 10th of 11 stops on the 2011 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour, Rip Curl Pro Search San Francisco, continued to treat the fans to a heavy dose of thrilling action as Australia’s Owen Wright took on his compatriot Dean Brady
in the first heat, while Australia’s Joel Parkinson competed with America’s Dillon Perillo in the second heat of Round 2 that went down at Ocean Beach in San Francisco, America, on Tuesday, November 1.
The first heat saw Wright take down Brady to clinch top honours and secure his place in the third round, while removing the latter from the contention for the event-title.
Parkinson defeated Perillo in the second heat to advance through into Round 3, bringing the competition to a premature end for his rival in the process.
The 21-year-old Wright had been simply fantastic over the last two months and it came as a huge shock to find him faltering in the opening round of Rip Curl Pro Search San Francisco. Forced to compete in Round 2 to ensure his survival in the competition,
the young Australian could not afford to lose.
As the first heat of the second round got underway in clean three-to-five foot waves, both the Australians struggled to get their hands on a competitive score. Despite a desperate effort, Wright was only able to collect a 4.33 and 6.83 off his top-two waves
for a heat-total of 11.16 points. The heat-total hardly seemed like a winning one and left the window of opportunity wide open for his opponent.
However, Brady failed to capitalise on the opportunity and ended up finishing with a heat-total of 8.07 points, which included a 3.40 and 4.67-point wave. The 3.09-point deficit forced him to concede victory to his rival, sending him through into the next
round.
The next heat saw the formidable Australian force, Parkinson, take on Perillo in a battle for survival. Both the surfers struggled to find good scores, making it an extremely low-scoring heat.
The 30-year-old Parkinson hunted hard for a decent score, but he was unable to get anything better than a 3.83 and 4.77. Finishing with a heat-total of 8.60 points, the Australian left himself extremely vulnerable.
However, Perillo came up with an even more lacklustre performance, earning 4.73 and 1.77 off his top-two waves for a heat-total of 6.50 points. He was forced to surrender the win to Parkinson, sending the Australian into the next round.
