Australia’s Owen Wright took out the Breaka Burleigh Surf Pro after putting on a superb performance to get the better of fellow compatriot Adam Melling in the final that went down at Burleigh Heads in Australia on Sunday, February, 10, 2013.
The timing of the victory could not have been any better, as the confidence gained from the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 4-Star event is just what Wright needs as he readies himself for the latest season of ASP World Championship Tour, which
is to kick-off at Snapper Rocks in less than three weeks.
“It feels great, I’ve put so much effort into training lately for the year ahead and I’m feeling fit and injury free and I’ve got the right boards – this is just part of what I want to do this year,” said Wright.
Both Wright and Melling were in prime form throughout the course of Breaka Burleigh Surf Pro, holding their own against a large field comprising majorly of Australian surfers, though there was plenty of international talent in contention for top honours,
a portion of the prize purse and coveted ASP ranking points. Former two-time ASP World Champion Mick Fanning had also participated in the competition, though he got knocked out before even reaching the quarter-finals.
Wright and Melling found themselves pitted against each other after registering a win in their respective semi-final battles.
As the battle for the overall victory got underway, Wright got off to a solid start and stamped his authority over his rival halfway through the heat with a 9.17-point ride.
He went on to add an additional 6.10 points to his account, thus getting to a heat-total of 15.27 points.
Melling was nothing short of impressive either, scoring a 5.80 and an 8.17 for a heat-total of 13.97 points. However, it was not enough to put the heat-total of his rival under threat.
With Wright winning men’s field at the Breaka Burleigh Surf Pro and Sally Fitzgibbons claiming victory in the women’s field. It eventually turned out to be an Australian domination at Burleigh Heads.
It remains to be seen if the first stop of both 2013 ASP World Championship and 2013 ASP Women’s World Championship is conquered by an Australian surfers as well.
